External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Monday announced the government’s decision to do away with police verification for the issuance process of passport, for first-time normal category passport applicants.
Sushma Swaraj tweeted that a passport would be issued if an application is submitted with copies of the Aadhaar card, voter ID and PAN card, and an affidavit of no criminal case which includes family details and citizenship.Citizens will be granted a fresh passport under the normal category in a week’s time by submitting just four documents – copies of Aadhaar card, electoral photo identity card (EPIC) and PAN card – an affidavit in the format of Annexure-I (declaration of citizenship, family details and no criminal record).
Aiming for faster delivery of passports, the government in a press release said that police verification will take place after the travel document is issued, provided certain identity documents are submitted at the time of filing application.Where earlier police verification would cause a long delay in acquiring the passport, this new procedure will skip the process till the passport is issued, provided the submitted documents are validated.
Swaraj further added that an appointment can be chosen from the first five available dates for passport related services.
