We stumbled upon this set of shocking pictures of young actors taking a screen test way back in the 1950s. These photographs, taken by James Burke for Life Magazine, were brought back from the dead with a Life archive hosted by Google.
The photographs show Hindi movie director A R Kardar of Kardar Productions taking a screen test of aspiring actresses for his movie in the 1950s. The director of famous movies like Dillagi (1949), Dulari (1949), Dil Diya Dard Liya (1966) etc, can be seen asking the two young girls to try out different looks and even strip down in their presence.
For those who wonder what happened behind closed doors, here is a glimpse through a monochromatic filter.
While this may have been (and still may be) routine procedure for casting an actor in a film, these pictures to some do make the viewer a bit uncomfortable. The two men in the picture, one who happens to be Mr Kardar, can be seen examining the young girls and passing huge grins at each other.
The Life archive includes a searchable database of photographs from the LIFE photo archive, stretching from the 1750s to today. So, go on and take that trip way down memory lane and the results that turn up will surely surprise you.
